Riddick "Big Daddy" Bowe is the last Undisputed Heavy Weight Champion of the World. He is, perhaps, the last of a breed. A breed that was not afraid to take on anyone and everyone that called him out. A man big enough to carry the word Undisputed without crumbling under the weight of his celebrity or the constant scrutiny of the sportswriters who doubted his talent.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, a town known to spawn more than a few tough guys, Bowe honed his early skills fighting with his 12 siblings. On more than a few occasions while Bowe's mother was out working a night shift, his brothers would wake him in the middle of the night to settle a score. A turning point for Bowe came in Middle School (IS-218), when his teacher showed the class a video on Muhammad Ali. Ali's accomplishments and life's story sparked a fire in the 13 year old Bowe that continues to this day.
Bowe began working out at the Bed-Stuy Boxing Club in Brooklyn New York. It became quickly evident that this young boxer had the natural talent and discipline to become one of the greats. Between the ages of 17 - 21, Bowe won the NY Golden Gloves 4 times in 2 weight classes. He fought on the 1988 US Olympic team in Seoul, Korea and came home with a silver medal. This international experience convinced Bowe that he was ready to turn professional. Although some doubted his dedication, Bowe showed them otherwise in his first professional bout by knocking out future #1 contender Lionel Butler.
This was just the beginning of a professional career that spanned 8 years and took him to the top of the sport and the top of the world. Bowe had an ongoing rivalry with Evander Holyfield that gave boxing fans some of the most exciting boxing ever exhibited by heavyweights. The 10th round of their first fight is considered by many to be one of the best rounds ever fought.
In November 1992 Bowe became the Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion(WBA/IBF/WBC). He recaptured WBO Heavyweight Champion Belt in 1995 and held it through 1996. In 1992 Ring Magazine named him "Fighter of the Year". After retiring in 1996, Bowe went on to enjoy his family and fortune in Ft. Washington, MD. After many years out of the limelight he is now rekindling his passion for boxing. Bowe is becoming active in the DC boxing scene and is ready to lend his knowledge and unique approach to the next generation of fighters. |
